Research in the Library: Books

The catalog

The library catalog has records for physical items housed in the library as well as ebooks.  You can access the VC Library Catalog under "Find Books" section of the Library homepage.

A basic search of "owls" in the catalog yields results that include children's books, circulating books, oversized books, ebooks and books on cd:

Finding books in the library

In order to find items in the Library, make note of the location and the call number

The Ventura College Library uses Library of Congress call numbers to organize our books.  This is an alphanumeric system used by most academic libraries.

Books are organized in alphabetical and then numerical order.  There are signs at the ends of the book aisles with the call number ranges.

For more information about reading call numbers, see the "Understanding call numbers" subtab of the Books tab.  Then consult the Library layout map to help find your book.

Using eBooks

To read an ebook, click on the title of the book and scroll down to the "Holdings Information".  Then click on the link to view online.

The Ventura College Library has electronic books from several different companies.  Each company has a different way to access their ebooks.

Consult the EBSCO eBooks research guide for specific information about using EBSCO products.
