APA 6th Edition Citation Guide: Introduction

This guide is not meant to act as a substitute for the APA Publication Manual, which is available in the Library.  It is also not as comprehensive as the APA Formatting and Style Guide of the Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University.  This guide is meant to serve as a refresher in understanding parts of a citation, as well as providing a few examples of some citations for commonly-used sources.

Why can't I just use my reference/citation management software to generate my References page?

  • While bibliographic management programs like Zotero are invaluable to researchers, none of these programs, including the References tab in Word, are perfectly correct all of the time.  You will need to edit your Reference List.

If you need one-on-one assistance with formatting or citing, please consult the Tutoring Center.  Appointments with tutors can be made online, and email assistance is also offered.

Many instructors have personal preferences for citations styles and exceptions.  Be sure to meet with or email your instructor with your questions, as they will be the ones grading your papers!
