Creating Accessible Course Content Creating Accessible Online Courses provides an overview of accessibility within online courses, focusing on the skills you will need to make your course both technically accessible and usable to a broad range of students. The course covers how to use online tools, including your course management system (CMS), to create accessible resources, to retrofit existing resources, and to curate new resources. The focal point of the course is learning how to use editors (both in your CMS and in common software, such as Microsoft Word) to enhance accessibility.
Accessibility in Canvas (self-paced) Canvas provides authors a foundation and a wealth of built-in tools to create inclusive experiences for all students. In this self-paced course, learn how to leverage all of Canvas’ tools to build an accessible and usable learning environment.
PDF Accessibility (self-paced) Faculty are course designers, constantly creating and curating instructional materials. College staff create and author documents to be shared campus-wide. This micro-course will help faculty and staff determine if their PDF files are accessible, and provide potential resources and strategies to delivering accessible electronic documents.
PowerPoint Accessibility (self-paced) PowerPoint presentations increase visual impact, can improve student focus, and are a great platform to provide additional insight with annotations and highlights. Ensure all of your students have access to your resources! This self-paced micro-course will focus on the essential elements needed to create an accessible PowerPoint, explain the basics of PowerPoint’s accessibility tools, and test if a PowerPoint you did not create is inaccessible. You will also have an opportunity to apply all that you have learned in a hands-on activity that will help build your skills throughout the course.
Microsoft Word Accessibility (self-paced) This self-paced micro-course will introduce you to the crucial elements needed to create an accessible Microsoft Word document, explain the basics of Microsoft Word’s accessibility tools, determine if a Microsoft Word document is accessible, and remediate accordingly. In addition, you will learn how to successfully retain all of your accessibility work if you need to export your Microsoft Word document to a PDF version. You will also have an opportunity to apply all that you have learned in a hands-on activity where you can remediate a Microsoft Word document.
Video Captioning Accessibility (self-paced) Videos can be powerful tools in the classroom and enhance students’ understanding. Captioning provides access for all of your students. Comprehension takes more than just visuals! Research shows captions as reinforcement help students with understanding and focused attention. Captions are crucial for students whose English is their second language and students with disabilities. This self-paced micro-course will introduce a range of captioning strategies, from doing it yourself to hiring a professional service provider, guiding you through effective pre-production lesson planning for videos to expedite the captioning workflow. Learn the basics of audio description, gain access to valuable resources to create quality captioning, and take all that you’ve learned and apply it to a hands-on activity that you can use in your course! your online material!
5-Day Challenge: Creating Accessible Course Content In this short "Do it For Yourself" challenge, you will not only learn how to create accessible course content from the beginning of your design process, but you will also begin to see how important this is to your students' success! Each day you can plan to spend about 20-30 minutes on the activity. We'll also share some easy-to-use resources and teaching aids that can support you after you've completed this 5-day Challenge. Each challenge is set up as a 20-minute daily activity to be completed across 5 days. Day 1: Create Heading Styles & Lists Day 2: Create Descriptive Links & Table Headers Day 3: Color Contrast & Meaning Day 4: Create Alt Text for Images Day 5: Captioning Your Videos Accurately 5-Day Challenges are designed for those new to Canvas who need to build a basic framework to build on.
Intro to Designing for Accessibility (self-paced) We want all our students to have a great learning experience, don't we? Designing with usability/accessibility in mind gives ALL students the chance to learn more effectively. This self-paced mini-course will introduce you to strategies for identifying and eliminating barriers to learning in your Canvas course.
